Steve has been involved with the theatre from an early age. He caught the bug from his mother’s side of the family. His maternal grandfather, Frank Foster, was a New Zealand tenor, discovered by Dame Nellie Melba (the great Operatic diva), who instigated his coming to London where he appeared with her at Covent Garden in La Boheme and then went on to appear with such luminaries as Enrico Caruso. In his twilight years, he appeared in Mrs. Dale’s diary with Jessie Mathews. Frank's wife, Steve’s grandmother, was a world renowned concert pianist and Steve’s own mother began her life in a theatrical basket, going on to become a professional dancer and actress. It was always Steve’s ambition to follow in his families footsteps. At the age of twelve, he showed first signs of being a singer, and began his vocal training with Dorothy Adams Jeremiah, the teacher responsible for nurturing, amongst others, the soprano, Dame Gwyneth Jones. While Steve was at school, he was cast as the High Priest in Verdi’s Nabucco, playing opposite principle artistes from both the English and Welsh National Opera Companies. Whilst playing this role, he was awarded a scholarship at the Welsh college of Music and Drama, under the tuition of Gerald Davies and Jeanette Massochi. To make ends meet, Steve worked on a part-time basis for a well-known fashion chain, while continuing his studies and performing for local Operatic Societies. In 1980, he was accepted into the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, but, unfortunately, due to the Arts Councils grants being cut, the D’Oyly Carte disbanded. Steve continued in fashion retail working for some of the large reputable names on the high street. The pinnacle of his career has to be when he was appointed as Visual Design Director for a well known chain of department stores. Steve retired from the retail world in 2001 when he and his partner Chris set out on a new challenge. They set up a 5 star Boutique Hotel in North Devon aiming at a discerning clientele and building up a superb reputation for service, style and great food. Even though he has been successful with whatever he puts his hand to. Steve has never lost his passion for theatre & music. Over the last 8 years Steve has recorded 3 albums. Masters of Melody which was recorded live in 2001, You & I was recorded in 2007 and his latest album Unexpected Songs has been recorded in 2008. Masters of Melody is a revue with music and anecdotes, which includes a brief reflection of some of the world's greatest songwriters that we've been lucky enough to experience over the last century. You & I has over 20 tracks of songs from Steve's favourite musicals. Unexpected Songs has a Cabaret/Lounge feel with more emphasis on the romantic ballad.
